A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am so pleased that you have landed on this page!

For over the past 25 years the Adventure Learning Centre and Camp Retreat have been building on the vision of our founders Randy and Kim Grebe to making an eternal difference in the lives of Bahamians and all who visit us from around the world.

As a native son and a product of the ALC&C ministry, I am humbled to be leading this great organization at such an important time.  I consider us as one ministry operating on two campuses with one goal - to make Christ known and to help persons to connect with him, themselves and each other.  I have an amazing team of missionary and local workers who represent over eight nationalities. We all share a heart for doing ministry and we all do ministry from our heart.

On your next visit be sure to pet  your favourite animal, immerse yourself in our planetarium dome show, explore our nature trail or wetland, discover God through our Science-Based curriculum, plunge down our super slide, discover and unleash your leadership potential through our values-based teaching, visit or pristine beaches, host your event, serve our communities as a mission worker or just take the time out to discover more of God around the campfire or during worship in our International Dining Hall.

Whatever you do when you arrive or for whatever reason you will come, I pray that you will leave more enriched and will feel the warmth of true Bahamian Hospitality and the love of Jesus Christ that lives among our 17-acre property.

Committed to Serve,

Dr. Kenneth Romer

OUR HISTORY

FROM THERE TO HERE..

The adventure began in 1986 when missionaries Randy and Kimberly Grebe had a vision for reaching out to school children in the Bahamas. As a young, impressionable boy Randy experienced a school outing at a day camp in Wisconsin where he was given the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment The memory of that day is connected many years later in the Bahamas with a Christian ministers dream to           utilize government-leased Crown Land for an educational program ministering to Nassau children. The merging of these divinely inspired visions by Randy Grebe and Pastor Hesketh Johnson                     provided the framework for planning what is now the Adventure Learning Centre.”Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain” Psalm 127:1 was the guiding scripture as the application and permits waited to be approved. After four years of in-school visits, youth group outreaches, and tireless commitment, the Grebes were granted 3 acres by the Bahamian government. In January, 1992 the groundbreaking construction of the Adventure Learning Centre began. Financial donations and volunteer labor came in from seven countries. The initial phases of development included the barn, animal shelters, the pond and bridge, and the 30 observation tower with a 45 super slide. Today, the Centre includes the Adventure Play Kingdom, Animal Encounter and Nature Centre, covered Pavilion, Wetland Safari, Train Station, Horse Stable, Welcome and Empowerment Centre and multiple green spaces.

The original Vision, however, became a reality on September 13, 1993; with the official endorsement of the Ministry of Education and a Grand Opening Ceremony. The Adventure Learning Centre began reaching thousands of children through field trips to the islands only outdoor education program. The first group of students arrived on October 18, 1993. Initially, programs were designed for fifth and sixth graders. Today all ages from toddlers to grade 12 benefits from our facilities and diverse programs. Twenty-Five (25) years later over 150,000 persons have come through our gates and experienced the reason why we exist; to know Christ and make Him known.

Originally, ALC was generally not open to the public, but due to the growing demands for a faith-centered family environment its doors are now opened six days per week. It also periodically offers special family-oriented events. These began in 1993 and continue to grow to include celebrations such as our Easter Monday Fun Day, Missions and Cultural Fair, The annual Christmas Lights Extravaganza, Mid-Term Madness, Hosting of International Forums, Camp Experience Farm Trip, Thanksgiving Dinner and Birthday and Special Occasions Celebrations.

On December 3, 1993 The ALC was given ownership of the facility formerly known as Joy Bible Mission, located just five hundred yards from the center. We moved into one ministry spread over two campuses.  Today, this 10 acre wooded property is known as the Adventure Learning Camp Retreat and serves as a major facility that accommodates international mission and local groups. The Adventure Learning Camp Retreat has 6 cabins that sleep 90 people, International Dining Hall, Kitchen Facilities, Camp Fire Area, Recreational and Activity Centers, Nature Trails, Private Lodging House, Agricultural Farm and a Bahamian-infused bathhouse. The facility meets the needs of the short term mission teams who visit to serve the people of the Bahamas with the hope only found in Christ as well as many local groups who are looking to escape the familiar and connect with God and each other in an authentic environment.

In 1998 the Media Center, including a 24 Planetarium, was completed for the purpose of expanding its program to reach both primary and high school students. To date this is the only Planetarium in the Bahamas and Region. It continues to be an exciting opportunity to present astronomy based curriculum sharing the wonders of the universe and its starry host while including the message of salvation as scripture itself declares the heavens declare the glory of God.  It has also expanded to take students through a journey through the human body in its dome shaped facility to support our science program while reminding students that they are God's Masterpiece.

The ALC property is adjoined with several acres of indigenous coppice forest and mangrove wetlands that reach to the ocean. Over a half mile of nature trails wind through the white land and black land coppice forest where students discover the beauty and importance of these scarce natural resources. A newly constructed 350 ft boardwalk into the wetlands was completed in January 2014. The boardwalk now allows the students to go where only their imaginations had gone before, directly into the wetlands. An associated two story wetlands observation tower literally gives them a bird’s eye view over the vast raw beauty of God’s creation. Thousands of people, from local bird watchers to school children, enjoy the native wetlands and coppice areas we are striving to conserve. In 2018 we launched our Brilliant Resilience of the Wetlands Program which serves as a major research opportunity for schools, universities and environmental groups.

As it was over 25 years ago, today we hold fast to Gods unchanging word as we move forward. “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” Psalm 127:1.
